Efter åratal av planering lyfter vätgasballongen Örnen från Spetsbergen den 11 Juli Målet för ingenjör Andrée och hans mannar är att komma först till Nordpolen och hissa den svenska fanan där ingen människa tidligare satt sin fot. Men redan tidigt tornar svårigheterna upp sig. Människans litenhet blir påfallende inför de mäktiga naturkrafterna och expeditionen blir en resa rakt mot döden, med Andrée som en härförare piskad av en vansinnig dröm att möjliggöra det omöjliga.

In one of the film's most unique touches whenever he takes a photograph it cuts to the real-life image that was captured! högsta Von Sydow is perfectly cast as the smart, determined (and slightly reckless) leader Andrée.
