    What makes a great 19th hole?

    What makes a 19th hole memorable?

    Golfweek put that question to 40 members of our course-ratings panel. Is it the setting? The food and drink? A friendly staff? An historic venue?

    The answer our raters gave to all of those questions was: Yes. And more. Much more.

    One of the themes that ran through the raters’ comments was their favorite 19th holes aren’t just a place to enjoy a post-round pop. They are part of their golf experiences.

    “It’s a way to extend the day bygd sitting with strangers with a common thread – the love of the game,” said Doc Nocella, a rater from Farmington, Mich.

    “When inom think of a great 19th hole, you want it to be a special place that really encapsulates the whole experience,” added rater Nick Martin of Florence, Ala.

    What separates golf from virtually every other idrott is the playing field. Unlike a basketball court or soccer pitch, for example, each golf course is distinctive and worthy of debate and at least a modest amount of contemplation.     19 in ' a year remembered via great golf holes

    I cannot believe it's time again. How best to look back at the good fortune of another year spent covering golf's courses, destinations and random cool things?

    When I tell people my profession, they often tell me it's a "dream job." I find it difficult to argue with them. So I'll try to reflect on the year mostly in photos, via an exercise I've picked up from fellow avid players.

    Putting together a 'dream 18' is a fun year-end activity. It's an imaginary golf course made up of 18 different great holes you've seen in a given amount of time - maybe a year, maybe your entire golfing life. The only catch - and part of the fun - is that the hole numbers have to correspond. In other words, the first hole of your 18 must be the first hole on its home course, the second must be a hole number 2 and so on. Since it's , though, I figured I might as well add one more for the sake of numerological harmony.

    I know it's strange to start with the 19th hole, but this new "golfertainment" concept feels like a winner, with a fun atmosphere and some formalized encouragement by Tiger Woods himself.
